The Tides — How They Affect Your Visit
The tides of the Mont Saint-Michel bay are the defining natural feature of any visit. The bay has one of the largest tidal ranges in the world — up to 15 metres between low and high water — and the speed of the incoming tide is famous. At high tide, the island is completely surrounded by water and the view from the causeway is breathtaking. At low tide, the sand flats of the bay are exposed and visitors can walk across to the island.
Neither high tide nor low tide is definitively “better” — they offer entirely different and equally spectacular experiences. Both are spectacular, but for different reasons. High tide surrounds the island with water — creating the famous mirrored reflection and the medieval fortress effect. Low tide reveals the vast sand flats of the bay and allows walking access to the island on foot. For photography, a high tide arrival with a low tide departure (or vice versa) gives you both experiences in a single visit. Check the tide schedule for your date and we will plan your departure time accordingly.
