The Musée Condé — France’s Second Greatest Art Collection
Le musée Condé abrite la deuxième plus grande collection de peintures anciennes en France après le Louvre, dont les célèbres Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry. The collection was assembled by Henri d’Orléans, Duc d’Aumale — the son of the last king of France, Louis-Philippe — and bequeathed to the Institut de France on the condition that it would never be loaned, reorganised, or moved from Chantilly. The collection therefore remains exactly as the Duc d’Aumale arranged it — a time capsule of 19th-century connoisseurship at its finest.
The highlights include Raphael’s Three Graces (one of only two known Raphaels in French museums), a remarkable series of miniatures by Jean Fouquet, works by Fra Angelico, Nicolas Poussin, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, and Antoine Watteau. The Sanctuary — a small room at the heart of the collection — houses the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry (in authenticated facsimile), the most celebrated illuminated manuscript of the Middle Ages. The Chantilly forest and its 3,000 racehorses make this one of the most important thoroughbred training centres in the world.
